Why Personal Growth Starts With Reflection

Personal Growth

As the new year approaches, I’m left asking myself what 2016 was all about. Am I happy with the year? What did I learn? Did I grow as a person? This time of year is a great time to step back and reflect upon the previous twelve months.

A little reflection goes a long way for personal growth. The key for me is being prepared to accept what I learned.

To many of us get caught up in the everyday actions of others. We’re constantly striving to keep up with the people we perceive as having everything we want. On the surface, yes, these people appear to have it all. Their Facebook posts are filled with happy, smiling faces. They’re constantly doing things and seem to be living life.

Yet the truth is most people have an emptiness. Why? Because we’re trying to live up to a vision of life that is dictated to us.

Personal Growth Through Reflection Helps You Find Your Definition of Success

What is the definition of success? For each person, true success is different. Is the attainment of wealth success? I’ve met a number of wealthy individuals and they’re miserable people. The old adage is true, money doesn’t buy happiness. Reflecting on the person you are and the person you want to be will open you up to self-discovery. You will realize your success comes from what you want. Pursuing your happiness will make you successful.

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful”

Albert Schweitzer

We’ve heard it time and again, find your passion, pursue it. Successful entrepreneurs follow their hearts and build their business. This is true. Yes, you need to find an idea that ultimately will work. But you can make most “things” work if you believe in it.

Successful entrepreneurs believe in their own ideas. They believe in themselves. They believe in personal growth. Creative entrepreneurs are no different. I believe in what I create. It comes from within. My mandala drawings, my poetry, this blog, are passions.

There are three things you can do to help you reflect:

  • Find quiet space and think.
  • Journal your thoughts.
  • Doodle

We all need quite time and space. This allows us to clear our heads and reflect upon our lives. Personal growth comes from our thoughts and time to think. Writing your thoughts down in a journal is a great way to reflect. Most importantly, you can see your successes and failures in writing. A great way to learn about yourself.

My personal favorite is doodling. Doodling lets your mind wander. What’s best, is some of those doodles end up making great art.

Wrap Up

So you want success and happiness? Your happiness is up to you. Reflect, grow as a person and find your happiness. Success will follow.
