3 Reasons Why Doodling Is Beneficial

Do you doodle? I love to doodle. Over the years I’ve filled margin after margin with aimless, nonsensical doodles. We all do it or have done it at some point.

The definition of doodling is to scribble absent-mindedly. I like to think it’s more of a creative pursuit.

Doodling has several benefits for your daily life and creativity!

I find myself doodling all the time. Usually little circles and triangles and other shapes. What’s great about doodling is what it does to get the creative juices flowing. But there’s more:

1.Doodling Improves Focus

Doodling improves your focus and concentration. Research shows those who doodle retain more information by doodling. Up to 29% more information. So the next time you’re in a meeting or talking to the spouse, a few doodles on a piece of paper may just help.

Well, maybe not with the spouse…I digress.

2.Doodling Is Great For Creativity

I’m always talking about being creative and sparking that creativity. Doodling is a perfect way to spark the creativity in all of us. It doesn’t matter what your field or job is. Every industry needs creativity.

If you’re an artist, even better. How many times do you get stuck in that creative block? Next time, doodle. Just start. Go. Do it. Trust me.

3.Relax and Reduce Stress By Doodling

Let’s face it, modern life is stressful. We’re all rushing around for reasons we think are important. We’re on Facebook watching mindless videos that only waste time.

Work, family, businesses, we’re stressed. Doodling is the injection of mindless creativity that helps us relax. I will randomly draw just to escape the daily grind. It’s peaceful.

It’s healthy. Try it. When we’re relaxed, we have more clarity. We’re more creative and happy.

Doodling For A Better Life

Making little scribbles is great for an overall healthy lifestyle. Being a doodler improves cognitive function and memory. We all need to think and being a doodler appears to improve overall thinking functions.

For me, being a doodler improves my creativity and fosters more artistic ideas. I’m happier and healthier because of it.

Of course, what would a post about doodles be without some artwork:

This piece started out much smaller and quickly morphed into a larger zentangle design.

On a warm spring day I saw a butterfly and well, look what happened:

Wrap Up

Ask yourself if you want to think more clearly, be happier, have more ideas, better memory, and less stress. If you said yes to any of these than becoming a doodler is for you.

Grab a notebook or small pad and get doodling. Trust me.

Do you doodle? What else do you do to build your creativity and decrease stress?
