Creative JumpStart: Meditation

Creative JumpStart

It’s Monday again and after a long week and even shorter weekend, I wanted to take a different direction with the Creative JumpStart: meditation.

No equipment or assembly required here. Just a little time and quiet. So let’s get started.

Meditation is more than simply relaxing. You breathe new life into your mind and new ideas spring up.

Meditate How You Want

I’m sure you don’t have all the time in the world to relax and allow yourself time to simply be quiet.

The good news is I’m only asking for 3 minutes of your day. Yes, 3 minutes.

But what those three minutes of daily meditation can do for your creativity is phenomenal. Clearing your mind and focusing your thoughts opens you up to infinite creative possibilities.

Let’s get started.

Find a quiet spot in your home. Put away all distractions especially your phone.

Put it down. Do it.

Now sit or lay, whatever you prefer.

Breathe. Breathe deeply and close your eyes.

Block every distracting thought from your mind too. Meditation is about mental focus. Don’t worry about work right now. Forget about that ill-conceived design you drew last week.

You’ll pay the credit card bill later.

Breathe. Keep a rhythm in your deep breathing.

Focus your mind on one thing. Just focus on that. I usually use something from nature. A mountain image, a flower, anything that brings peace to my mind.

As you clear your mind and focus on that one thing, take note of what you feel. Remember your breathing rhythm. Exhale.

Now that your three minutes are up, let your thoughts wander. What are you coming up with? In your mind, ask yourself some questions about past creative ideas.

Now go about your day and before bed, jot any and all ideas you had during the day down.

Repeat tomorrow.

Wrap Up

This week’s Creative JumpStart is short but to the point. Meditation will help you not just with your creativity, but with relieving stress. I find the relaxation I gain from meditation changes my perspective on many things.

Life is easier and more creative when you take a few minutes to let your mind be. Now go, meditate.
